We have started the year with 10 students Fiona and Miss Lisa, a student teacher from America. Miss Lisa is with us for six weeks and we intend making the most of the great pupil teacher ratio. Already we have had a lot of fun learning about each other by researching and graphing some of our favourite things. We are learning to read the graphs and make conclusions. Of course we had to test things, like our favourite fruit and our favourite ice cream. Miss Lisa says that now she has tried hokey pokey ice cream it is definately her favourite. Check out her look of delight as she samples it for the first time.

Mr Mac and Doug the Digger

Mr Mac came to visit us in his big rig to tell us about his life as a trucker and an author. This is a time when libraries and schools around New Zealand all sit down at the same time and read the same book. Because this year's book was Piggity-Wiggity-Jiggity-Jig by Diana Neild we decided to take the book and read it to another class because we loved it being read to us. We went to Room 9 on the 20th August and Fiona read the book to all of us. Isn't it amazing to think there were children all around the country listening to the story being read at the same time as us.
Piggity-Wiggity-Jiggity-Jig was the book we studied for Book Backchat this term.

Coconut experience

Part of growing up is to experience new things. When Fiona brought the coconut to school we were ALL prepared to give it a go. Some of us liked the milk as well as the flesh. Some of us only liked the flesh and some of us didn't like the coconut at all. We studied a fairy tale for a week and then wrote our own version based on what we had noticed in all the stories we had read. We are very proud of our efforts and hope you enjoy reading them. The first one was easy because we knew the story.

Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time there was a woodcutter and his wife and their daughter Little Red Riding Hood.

One day Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother was sick. Little Red Riding Hood took some cake and flat lemonade to her grandmother’s cottage. Before she left her mother told her, “Don’t talk to strangers.”

As she was walking through the forest the big bad wolf jumped out in front of her.
“Where are you going?” said the big bad wolf.
Little Red Riding Hood replied, “I am going to my grandmother’s cottage with some cake and flat lemonade.”
“Why don’t you pick some flowers for your sick grandma?” the wolf suggested.
The wolf raced Little Red Riding Hood to grandma’s and gobbled Grandma up.

When Little Red Riding Hood arrived she said,
“Grandma what big eyes you have.”
The wolf replied, “All the better to see you with.”
“Grandma what big ears you have”
“All the better to hear you with my dear.”
“Grandma what big teeth you have.”
“All the better to eat you with my dear.” And he jumped out of bed and gobbled Little Red Riding Hood up. Then he licked his lips.

Along came the woodcutter and cut the wolf in half and said, “No more of that big bad wolf.”
Grandma and Little Red Riding Hood jumped out of the wolf’s stomach and they all lived happily ever after.

Beauty and the Beast

Once upon a time there were three sisters. One was good and two were mean. Their father was a merchant.

One day the merchant saw a light flashing and he went to the light. He found a palace and went inside. There was food on the table and it was set for him to eat. Upstairs he fell asleep. In the morning he looked out the window and saw a red rose. He went downstairs and picked the rose for his beautiful daughter, Belle.

Suddenly a beast jumped out of the rose bushes. He roared very loudly, “don’t pick my rose or you will have to die.”
The merchant was terrified and agreed to bring a daughter. He was allowed to go home for one week.

The merchant went home and Belle said, “I will go father.”

The two big meany sisters laughed. Then the mean sisters said, “Yeah you go.”
Belle went to the beast’s palace to live. She looked in a room and saw some food set out for her. Her father sat down and ate with her. The beast did not come out until they had wiped their faces with a serviette.

When dad went home Belle went upstairs and looked in the magic mirror and she saw her dad sick and in bed. The beast promised she could go home for one week. She stayed two weeks because the two sisters tricked her with the clocks.

She looked in the magic mirror again and saw the beast dying in the garden. She ran as quick as lightning back to the palace and found the beast In the garden. She dropped a tear on him.

The beast turned into a handsome prince. They fell in love and they lived happily ever after.

Rumplestiltskin

Once upon a time there was a foolish miller. He told the king his daughter could spin straw into gold. The king took the girl into a room full of straw and told her to spin it all into gold by morning otherwise she would die.

She didn’t know how to spin straw into gold so she cried and sobbed until a silly old man with a pointy tail popped into the room through a window with a jump and a skip. “What’s all the fuss about?” said the silly old man.
“I can’t turn straw into gold by morning and the king will kill me.”
“What would you give me if I do it?” he replied and she promised him her necklace.
Next morning when she was asleep there was no straw on the ground. It had all been spun into gold on the bobbins. The king felt rich. He wanted more and he gave the girl an even bigger pile of straw.
He said, “If you don’t turn this straw into gold you will die!”

She started to cry again. Then with a jump and a skip the little old man came back through the window. This time she promised him her ring. The next morning the king came in and again he said, “I’ll give you a bigger pile this time and if you don’t spin it all into gold by morning I will kill you but if you do I will marry you.”
She cried and sobbed again. The little man came back again and this time she promised her first baby. When she was asleep the king came and there was no straw on the ground. It had been all turned into gold. The king married the girl and a year later she had a baby boy. The silly little man came in and wanted to take the baby boy. He promised the queen that if she couldn’t tell him his name in three days he would take the baby.

On the third day a traveller saw a funny little man dancing around a fire singing a song,
Ha – ha
Nobody knows my name,
Rumplestiltskin is my name.

The traveller went back and told the queen, who was able to guess the little man’s name.

The silly man was so angry that he stomped his foot on the wooden floor and made a big hole in it. He went right down it and Rumplestiltskin was never seen again and everyone lived happily ever after.

Hansel and Gretel

Once upon a time there was a poor woodcutter and there were two kids and one was Hansel and one was Gretel. There was an evil stepmother.

One night Hansel and Gretel heard their stepmother saying that they would take the kids into the woods so they could get some wood and they would light a fire and leave Hansel and Gretel there. Hansel went outside and got some white pebbles.

In the morning the woodcutter took the children into the forest and Hansel kept stopping to put a pebble on the ground. He told his father he was looking at the white cat up on the roof. The Stepmother said, “Come on lazy bones. That isn’t a cat. It is the sun rising and shining on the chimney.”

They went deeper and deeper into the forest and the woodcutter went to cut the wood and the stepmother tied a tree onto an old tree so it would knock on the old tree and sound like the woodcutter cutting the wood. Gretel said, “I can hear father’s axe cutting. They aren’t coming to get us.” Hansel said, “It is a trap. They are going to leave us here. The step mother is trying to trick us.

When it was dark in the forest they fell asleep and later they ate their bread. Soon they found the pebbles and they followed them home.

Next day Hansel put breadcrumbs down on the ground but when they went to look for them that night they couldn’t find them because the birds had eaten them.

They walked until they came to a cottage. The cottage looked yum because it had candy canes on it. The roof was made out of chocolate cake and the walls were gingerbread. Hansel said, “I could eat a whole house.” The windows were made of sugar.

The witch came out and glued Hansel and Gretel’s feet to the ground so they could not run away. The witch said, “You kids come inside.” When he was asleep the witch came and took Hansel away to a cave and the witch said, “Give me your finger so I can feel if you are fat enough to eat.” But the only thing he gave her was an old chicken bone his sister had given him.

The witch said, “You are not fat. You are to skinny to eat. I can’t wait any more I will just cook you and eat you up.”
The next day she told Gretel to get the fire ready. Gretel said, “I don’t know how to do it. Can you please show me and she pushed the witch into the fire. Hansel and Gretel went to get some gold and jewels and pearls and treasure. Then they went out the door and found a lake. Hansel said, “How will we get across ?”
A swan took Hansel and Gretel across to the end of the lake. They walked back home to see their dad. Their stepmum had died. Hansel said, “Look at the jewels we have found.”
…And they all lived happily ever after.

Rapunzel

Once upon a time there was a woman who was dying to eat some rapunzel. So her husband went to get her some. She made it into a bowl of salad. The next day she begged for more. Her husband went to get some more for her and when he climbed over the wall there was a witch standing by.
“How dare you eat my rapunzel you thief?” she said
“He replied my wife will die if you don’t let her eat it.”
The witch said, “very well take as much as you want but give me your firstborn baby girl.”

When the baby girl was born the witch came and took her away to her castle. She grew up and when she was twelve years old she was locked in a tower with no door and no stairs just one window way up the top of the tower. Every day the witch came to see her and called “Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your golden hair.” Rapunzel would let down her hair for the witch to climb up it.

One day a prince came riding by and heard her lovely singing. He stopped every day to listen but he didn’t know how to get up. One day there was a visitor at the tower calling,
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your golden hair.” And she let down her hair and the witch climbed up it and the prince said if that is the way to do it he would do it himself.
He waited until the witch came down and then called “Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your golden hair.” The hair came down to the prince. He climbed up it and Rapunzel was surprised to see the prince at the top of the tower. The prince was very surprised to see Rapunzel.

The prince came every day to see Rapunzel and she built a ladder out of silk. Rapunzel made a mistake and asked the witch, “Why do you pull on my hair so rough and why does the prince pull on it so carefully?”
The witch replied, “Ahah you have been having a visitor. You tricked me. I thought I had locked you away from the whole world.” She got a pair of scissors and cut her hair in one snip and dragged her far far away.

The next day the prince came up and standing there was – THE WITCH. She threw the prince out onto the prickle and he was blinded. He climbed onto his horse and the horse set off away to the big dark forest.

One day the prince heard some singing and rode towards it. It was Raupunzel. Rapunzel cried and her tears landed on him and he could see again.
They got married and they all lived happily ever after. Except not the ugly witch.

Snow White and Rose Red

Once upon a time there was a poor widow who lived in a cottage. She had two daughters named Rose Red and Snow White. Outside the cottage grew two rose bushes, one white and one red.

One night when there was a snowstorm there was a big loud knock at the door. Rose Red opened the door and there was a big brown friendly bear standing there wanting to come in. The girls were happy to let him in and warm up by the fire. He came back every day in the winter.

In the spring the bear said, “I have to leave now for the rest of the summer before the wicked dwarf comes and steals my treasure.”

One day when the girls were out in the woods a wicked dwarf had his beard stuck in an oak tree that he was chopping. Rose Red chopped a little bit of the beard off. The Dwarf said, “Mind your own business you big fat mean turnips. Why did you cut my beard? I’m going to be useless underground!”
He picked up his bag of jewels and vanished into the woods.

A few days later Snow White and Rose Red were back in the forest and they saw the little dwarf fishing. The enormous fish was pulling him into the water because his beard was tangled and wrapped around his fishing lines. Rose Red cut some more of his beard off so he wouldn’t go under water. The dwarf said, “Don’t cut my beard off any more you disgusting horrible meanies!”

Three days later their mother sent them to buy some needles and thread. On the way they saw the dwarf screaming with terror. A massive eagle was picking the dwarf up by his coat. The girls pulled the dwarf by his coat and his shoes. A struggle of war began. The girls won and the eagle flew away. The Dwarf complained that he was black and blue all over and that it was the girls fault.

The bear turned up and killed the dwarf with one mighty blow of his claw. The bears brown furry coat fell to the ground and a handsome prince was standing there.

Rose Red married him and Snow White married his brother. They lived in a castle on the other side of the forest and planted the red and white roses with them.

They all lived happily ever after.

The Ugly Duckling

Once upon a time there was an ugly duckling and six more ducklings living on a cow farm. There was a mum who said to the ugly duckling, “Are you sure you are one of mine?”

He went to visit the other ducks on the other side of the pond. They said, “Go away! You don’t look like one of us because you are so ugly.” The ugly duckling walked away. The ugly duckling was always slower at swimming than the other ducklings. Everyone he talked to wasn’t nice to him. He was sad and lonely.

He swam off all by himself and lived alone on the bank on the side of the forest. He had no one to snuggle up with in the winter. It started to snow and it got really cold and the pond was covered in ice. Then he was crying.

When it was sunny again he tried out his wings feeling strong. He saw some beautiful birds on the water. He said, “Hello white birds.”

“Honk!” they replied. “Look at yourself in the water you are one of us.”

The children were feeding the swans at the pond and said, “Look at the new swan he is the most beautiful one.” The ugly duckling looked at his reflection in the water.
He was a swan. He flew off with the other birds and they all lived happily ever after.
Honk! Honk!
